Misfits: an exhibition with Alison Lam

This exhibition explores what it is to not all fit together. The viewer will see and form their own relationships between the works, finding connections among the artworks that have purposefully been created as stand alone pieces.

Alison Lam identifies as a neurodivergent, interdisciplinary, socially engaged artist using differing materials such as porcelain, metals, glass and paper. Alison explores the idea of grief, discardment and ostracisation, through exploring and investigating process led investigations. She often refers to this process as ‘drawing with her hands’.

Having started her journey as an artist having completed 3D Design Degree at Middlesex University (then Middlesex Polytechnic!), Alison started working as an artworker/graphic designer within the world of advertising and branding. After starting a family of 3 boys, she retrained, gaining a Postgrad cert in Secondary School Art and Design teaching to KS3, GCSE and A-level students. She has lived in Northern Ireland, Hong Kong, France and now settled in England. However, the needs of her sons required her to take time out of professional work. having entered a challenging time of home schooling and tackling the Local Authority to ensure the right education provision for her two boys with Autism and complex needs. Consequently, Alison is conversant in the legislation around SEN support, and despite being challenging, this period has been instrumental in informing and inspiring her work and is the reason she then went on to study a MA in Fine Art and Social Practice.
