The cascading waters depicted throughout the exhibition serve as potent metaphors for life’s relentless demands: the endless stream of tasks filling our to-do lists; the accelerated pace of life; the constant barrage from various communication channels dividing our attention and the unremitting flow of troubling news from across the globe. As financial pressures mount in the cost of living crisis, work obligations can mount in an attempt to bridge the gap, leaving less space for the things that matter.
In this compelling solo exhibition, Julia harnesses the raw power and motion of fast-flowing waters to explore the modern experience of overwhelm. From semi-abstract acrylic landscapes to miniature works in multiples, collaged from the paperwork that can easily escalate into clutter, OVERFLOW creates a visual dialogue between natural phenomena and psychological states.
Yet within this exploration of modern anxiety, OVERFLOW also reveals moments of profound tranquility. Julia's intimate engagement with watery imagery – both as subject matter and through the meditative practice of creation itself – suggests a pathway to peace of mind. The very act of painting becomes a counter-current; a way of processing and finding equilibrium within the deluge.
Visitors are invited to immerse themselves in these layered works, where turbulent waters simultaneously represent both the source of our collective overwhelm and the natural forces that can restore our sense of balance.
