Kids in Museums Takeover Day is an annual event where galleries, historic homes, archives and heritage sites all around the country invite young people in to take over jobs normally done by adults, with the aim to empower young people and invite them to explore local museum spaces.
In 2023, we welcomed year 4 and Year 6 Students from Brookfield Primary School to take part in Museum Takeover Day.
The theme of the day was ‘let’s play’ and the 80 pupils definitely did just that! Activities on offer were based off of Lauderdale House’s history and included designing a Tudor feast fit for the House’s first owners in 1582, Richard & Dorcas Martin, creating Victorian spinning tops in the Lower Gallery which was a school house in the 1800s, and using former resident, Joy Hunt’s experience of living in the house during the Blitz to create a wartime skyline.
By offering these creative avenues into the past, pupils were able to engage with the House’s history, learn new skills and for many, it was a chance to visit a new place in their local area.
