Peter’s debut album Fractures was featured on BBC Radio 3 and Apple Music’s new classical playlist. Full of emotive melodies, deep rhythms and complex harmonies, he is thrilled to launch the album with his exciting new trio.
Written during lockdown, the album spans a huge range of influences from Chopin’s waltzes to meditations on space and echoes of ECM’s chamber jazz records. His tribute to the music of Ryuichi Sakamoto was chosen by the BBC to commemorate a year since his passing. The album also encompasses Cuban salsa, blues and cinematic works Peter has written in his role as a film composer.
Peter’s music has been performed at the Royal Albert Hall, Houses of Parliament and the Washington Mall outside the White House. Known as one of the UK’s foremost jazz and world music guitarists, he returned to the piano in 2020 after a long hiatus, as the pandemic arrived and live performances were being cancelled. The album reflects his joy of rediscovery as he wrote pieces to reconnect with the instrument.
For this special album launch concert, Peter has formed a new trio with one of the UK’s most celebrated double bassists, Charlie Pyne, and virtuoso Brazilian drummer Marcinho Pereira.
All pieces by Peter Michaels except 6 (by Avishai Cohen) and 13 (by Rafael Hernández Marín)
