Bass-baritone Mark Glanville and pianist Marc Verter perform Schubert's Winterreise, described as 'greatest classical song cycle ever written'.
Bass-baritone Mark Glanville and pianist Marc Verter have been performing classical recitals for 8 years, starting with 'Citizen of Nowhere: Mieczysław Weinberg – A Sung Life' which was performed at the Southbank Centre, Israeli Opera and the Polin Museum Warsaw and will be recorded on the Challenge label later this year. Their 'Barbaric Verses' programme was performed at Kings Place and the Sholem Asch Festival Kutno in Poland. Last year they performed Glanville's 'Yiddish Winterreise' at Kings Place.
Schubert's Winterreise, composed in 1827 a year before the composer's death, aged 31, is widely held to be the greatest classical song cycle ever written. It tells the story of a lover rejected for another man whom his beloved is set to marry. The journey of the cycle unfolds in a rural landscape, the moods and drama of the protagonist reflected in the wintery natural world he encounters.After studying Classics at Oxford University and singing at the RNCM, Mark Glanville performed as Bass soloist for Opera North, Scottish Opera, Lisbon Opera, Israeli Opera, Opera Zuid, and in concert with Yehudi Menuhin, Daniele Gatti, Stanisław Skrowaczewski and David Willcocks. His Yiddish Winterreise was performed at Kennedy Center, Leeds Lieder Festival, Purcell Room and recorded for Naxos. His memoir, The Goldberg Variations, was shortlisted for the Wingate Prize for Jewish Literature.
Marc Verter is a collaborative pianist, vocal coach and repetiteur. Marc was the artistic director for over five years at the Chelsea Schubert Festival. Previous opera engagements have included Aix en Provence festival, Opera pa Skeret programme in Sweden and Dartington festival in the UK. He has performed at music festivals in Israel, North America and Europe and has played for such internationally renowned singers as Yvonne Kenny, Jonathan Lemalu, Nelly Miricioiu, Kate Royal, Sarah Walker and Israeli star soprano Chen Reiss.
