Sephardic Songs were born in the home environment where women expressed their joys, hopes and challenges. Issues regarding motherhood and family relationships were important subjects preserved in song.
The concert will include beautiful and moving melodies, some of which present the dialogue between mother and daughter. In these songs both characters communicate their expectations and challenges in love, adult life and marriage.
Colombian-born singer Monica Acosta says,
“Women were often not allowed to sing in the synagogue, so they sang at home – expressing their joys and challenges. The song subjects are often deep, but also comical stories of daily life – dealing with gossip, annoying neighbours, or the conflicts of having two lovers, something I feel that no man could write about as well as a woman can!”
Tsitsit is the Fringe Festival with a Jewish flavour. With a strapline of “if it's Jewish enough for you, it's Jewish enough for us”, Tsitsit Fringe celebrates the many differing strands of contemporary Jewish identities and artistic expressions.
