This brand new exhibition by our Fresh youth collective explores the fashion of Kanga.

Kangas are rectangular printed cloths originating in East Africa, each with their own inscription/symbols. Our young people learned about how individuals use different colours and patterns in their kangas to communicate their unique history, beliefs, politics, fashions, status and aspirations.

Our young participants carved their designs into polystyrene tiles, chose their signature colours and practiced printing different patterns to create designs reflective of their own identities. The six-week project culminated in the middle of December 2024 with participants adorning clothing with their final designs.

Our Fresh Youth collective, run in partnership with Camden Youth Services, is for young people aged 13 - 19 (up to 25 for young people with disabilities). They meet every Thursday from 4pm to 6pm for free and fun creative sessions at Lauderdale House where they collaborate with exciting artists. The programme is youth-led and year-round, with the participants contributing ideas to future sessions and giving feedback at every stage of planning.
