Paintings by Andy Gashe & Louise West

Opening Dates & Hours

This is the first joint exhibition by Andy Gashe and Louise West at Lauderdale House. Their work compliments each other, creating a dynamic between quiet reflection, energy and abstraction.

Andy Gashe is a painter and printmaker who lives and works in London. His work takes its inspiration from the multi layered and fragmented urban environment. It’s a response to the frenetic and chaotic energy that courses through the streets of London.  A city of tower blocks, building sites and relentless construction.  A starting point or inspiration for these works can be a morning on the marshes, late afternoon walks along the Thames, social scenes of city life or a late-night bike ride through the city. Having previously worked from memory and photography and preferring a more gestural and abstract mark making approach, Andy recently challenged himself to three months of observational drawing. Time spent observing, drawing and recording the distinctive and unique character of these special places and his infinite connection to them.

Louise West’s cityscapes and landscapes were painted during lockdown with the purpose to visually record a sense of liminal spaces. A time of feeling unsettled in familiar spaces now unfamiliar, empty of purpose and motion. Her paintings contain a stillness, painting the mundane and ordinary, capturing the everyday and overlooked, asking the viewer to reflect and contemplate their surroundings.

Everyone is welcome to the opening night of the exhibition on Wednesday 16 August from 7.30pm to 9.30pm.
