Massimo Modoni and Andrés Gallucci Explore Opera’s Most Sinister Passions

Renowned baritone Massimo Modoni and pianist Andrés Gallucci present The Seven Deadly Sins, a powerful and provocative recital exploring the baritone voice as the ultimate vehicle for portraying the darker sides of the human condition— from pride to despair, from lust to vengeance. Through the works of Verdi, Puccini, Leoncavallo and Giordano, this program takes audiences on a journey through a progressive moral and spiritual deterioration, culminating in emotional devastation that lingers long after the final note.

The recital opens with Pride, where the baritone’s characters believe themselves invincible, embodied in Verdi’s Macbeth. Wrath burns through love and compassion in Rigoletto, while Envy poisons relationships in Un ballo in maschera. Greed emerges as a hunger for control in Otello, while Lust manifests as the most primal corruption of the soul in Tosca. Sloth reaches its tragic peak in Pagliacci, as Tonio acknowledges his cruelty and inaction. Finally, Despair finds its inevitable climax in Nemico della patria from Andrea Chénier, where the once-idealistic Gérard resigns himself to spiritual annihilation.

Performed by baritone Massimo Modoni and pianist Andrés Gallucci, The Seven Deadly Sins promises an evening of gripping drama, exploring opera’s most tormented characters in a recital that will leave audiences haunted and transformed
